First, I must state that I AM NOT A TREKKIE! The only reason I watch the show is for writing type ideas. The reason I never post any of my writings is that they are shit spawned from the deepest, most godless portions of the bottom of hell. They are crap.
I got this Idea from the show where Q first makes enterprise encounter the borg. It was very simple. What would happen if you made a large computer network that could constantly communicate and set it off on it's own, with the ability to sense weight, height, hot, cold, etc. Would it evolve? Would it spawn some of the most advanced technology ever made?
This also develops the question "what is sentience?". Are we sentient because we can act on emotion? Or is sentience judged by the usage of tools to make a job eisier? IT also brings up the question would these machines interface with humans to make an "Ultimate Machine". This is why we fear AI inhtellegence. It is because of sieries like Star Trek and it's Borg, AI and the Robots, or even Robocop, although he is the good guy. These bring out the fear that if it's intelegent it cannot be controlled. This is unfortunatly not true.
Look at torturees. They are "Controlled" by usage of threat, but it works. If you lock a person in a room, with a door and place a device around there neck with the explicit instruction not to leave the room or take it of, with the right stimuli, they will. It dosen't have to be visible. Audibe sounds are bad enough. This is just one example. Another is through daily conversation. If you want to, you can lead a conversation to make a person foul up. IT's one of the many ways I use to tell if one of my friends are lying. There are others, but I shall not post them here. I still want to cause some "mystery".
But the same can be supplied for this "Adodriod lifeform". A change in the language recognition program can lead to misinterpretations of data, causing a command to crush as a command to release. It would be difficult as hell to coordinate, but it could be done. Using the fact that this network of computers would work much like the nodes of a human brain, deactivating a node could damage a "vital system" making it unable to perform a simple action such as swing the aformentioned drones arm.
...Wait, what the hell am I thinking... we are nowhere near this technology...
Well, I guess this was a waste of time then. Well, rant at you latter.
